Tuesday Notes

It's been stormy and cold since Saturday night. The storms are ok but the cold....not so much!
Although, with the cold one does not have to deal with the prospect of tornadoes.

As I was shifting through my to-do list the sirens went off......very startling as this is Tuesday, not Wednesday the test day. After the first shock I told myself it's way to cold for a tornado and sure enough the weather radio came on with "test" alarm. Cripes! I'd like to give them a piece of my mind, I mean, why not tomorrow? Is the weather going to play a game on us and get hot with storms...tomorrow? I think not!

As you know, I joined "The Growing Challenge" in hopes of getting some first hand info on gardening. As we get closer to summer I'm sure more posts will pop up. I'm still interested in info on the 5 in 1 tree. I found one post from last year where one was planted. Hope to see something this year as to how the tree (pear) is doing.

As for my raised garden.....it's been storming so my tires are stacked, just sitting, just waiting.
And I took a moment yesterday....and for the first time.....really looked at them. That hole in the tire is pretty small! My plan on paper consisted of a tire, a tomato plant in the center with a cage around it, and smaller vegs planted all around.

Never going to happen! The only thing that will fit in that hole is one tomato plant minus the cage. Fortunately tomatoes are not a cool weather plant so on with plan B or C or whatever!

I wonder......I've seen tomato plants in buckets, upside down, hanging from a pole, with lots of tomatoes. I have LOTS of buckets! And two clothes line posts!

As you can probably tell, tomatoes are a high priority veg for this summer :)

Tomatoes and peas. Those are the priorities.

The Growing Challenge

My garden is still the planning process. I've arranged and rearranged it too many times to count!

I do know I want a raised garden and decided to use old tires in place of wood. My friend Barb has two old tires so I drove to her house today and picked them up. On the way home I saw another tire someone had set out for the trash so I stopped and picked it up. I now have three tires ready to place.....somewhere :) Jackie has two tires for me so I'll be getting them sometime this week.

It's slowly coming together and, fortunately for me, it's still a little early to start planting.

First on on the list......peas!

The Growing Challenge

Time has flown by this week. I've been busy with the every day hum drum things, putting together items for my Bonanzle booth, and making plans for this year's garden.

I'm still looking into fruit trees. I'm drifting toward the dwarf variety as they are short enough for me to pick and their (advertised) fruit is the same size as those grown on regular size trees. If this is not so, or if you prefer one over the other, I'd really like to hear about it.

Looking through the catalogs I find the 5 on 1 dwarf fruit trees. I don't know of anyone who has planted this type of tree and wonder if it works. It would take up less space and are self-pollinating.

My first tree is going to be apple and the 5 on 1 would give me Red Delicious, Yellow Delicious, Dark Red Jonathan, Yates and Winesap. I have no idea what Yates and Winesap are like as I've never had either one. Are you familiar with this type of tree? I would appreciate your input!

If that works it means I could get the 5 on 1 Dwarf Pear Tree which would give me Bartlett, Kieffer, Moonglow, Orient and Ayres.

Then the plum tree. And guess what..............there's a Dwarf Fruit Cocktail Tree. This tree would have nectarines, peaches, plums, and apricots. This is getting exciting!

So today I am looking for your expertise! Anything you would like to share would be so appreicated! Fruit trees are outside my experience and knowledge. If this works out my family will never have to buy fruit again! What a blessing that would be!!

By the way, do dogs eat fruit??? (lol)

The Growing Challenge

While cruising the blogosphere I found this site. Since I decided I would give gardening a try agan I put my name on their growing list of members. It's free and not only will it be fun it will be educational. I've always been the "poke a hole and insert seed" type. I've had great luck everywhere but here, where I now live.

You see, we have deer. Lots and lots of deer. Whole herds of deer that wander the neighborhood looking for anything editable. Flowers included. If my yard was fenced I'd just leave trusty Miss C in charge of the garden. She loves to chase deer. She loves keeping every dog, cat, rabbit, and human out of her yard. She's a great dog!

At the end of my yard I want to plant dwarf fruit trees. Apple, pear, peach, and plum (an old neighbor of mine had a plum tree that produced the best plums I have ever eaten. When ripe they were almost black, they were so dark. Anyone know what kind that might have been so I can get one of my own?). I've been looking for dwarf fruit trees on line and in various seed catalogs.

As for my garden, I love peas! It's February already so I need to check to see if it's too late to start my seeds. If I recall correctly they need to be planted in early spring. Early spring...just when does "early spring" start? When the ground isn't frozen or when the ground warms up or is it a month? Geez, I can't remember cause I never do the peas in time, whatever time that is, lol!
